New VFDs improved operational efficiency and energy reductions at BC site

Bouygues have been working in partnership with Fraser Health Authority for over ten years at the LEED Gold certified Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC), where we deliver long term integrated facility management, and lifecycle works. As part of our scope, our in-house Certified Energy Manager provides continuously monitors energy performance to identify opportunities to help our clients save money.

In 2019, an opportunity to optimize the configuration of the heating and cooling pumps in the building was identified; resulting in a substantial energy consumption reduction.

Variable frequency drives (VFDs) were installed on the four 40 HP main heating and cooling pumps. Existing motorized control valves were recommissioned to allow just one of the two parallel Multistack heat pump chillers to be active during shoulder seasons. This resulted in water flow being cut by 50% for most of the year.

The project was implemented with no disruption to FHA’s healthcare activities in this extremely busy health care facility. Since its completion in May 2020 (at November 2022), this project has delivered total savings of 450,000 kWh (180,000 kWh annually) and an annual utility cost saving of $10,800. A BC Hydro PowerSmart Incentive of $19,000 was secured for the building owner, the Fraser Health Authority.
